In Restoration: Vintage Sears Hi Fi Amp

This one is a project from a few years ago. We found this Sears hi fi amp and fell in love with its vintage styling. (Check out that speaker cloth! It looks like an old cozy sweater.) When we received it, it had no knobs and no handle. Someone had lost the knobs, but, to be fair, it had no handle because it wasn’t meant to be portable. It also clearly hadn’t been used in a while, because the input jack was missing.

We added a new input jack and a three-prong cord, then revised the circuit to better suit a guitar. Inside, the amp was very simple: all-tube, with a single-ended output stage. In the end, it became a very cool bedroom amp with a lot of vintage style.
