New colors for the Tropical Fish M3 preamplifier
We originally planned to put the M3 preamplifier in mahogany cabinets only, but, while we were picking mahogany pieces at the lumber yard, we noticed a few other woods that looked interesting. We made a few test cabinets and really like how they turned out!
Anigre. This is a light, warm wood that we chose because we really liked the grain pattern. When we chose the green color of the faceplate, we brought a finished mahogany swatch to our powdercoater, so we knew the green looked great with dark woods. But when we saw this piece of anigre at the lumber yard, we loved it so much that we wanted to see how the green fared against a lighter wood too. We think it looks great!
Honduran mahogany. This was another lumberyard impulse buy. The piece we selected has a very thick grain with a lot of definition—almost silvery in places. We made these cabinets very early, when we thought that we were going to use plywood backs, so we did not set any aside to make matching backs. We decided to use Douglas fir for the back, which has a very warm yellow color that matches the highlights in the grain.
Walnut. Walnut was a customer request, and it was such a great call! It is a dark, cool-toned wood that looks great with the green faceplate. The coolness of the wood makes the faceplate seem almost desaturated, compared to the warmer amps. There is a lot of color variation in the grain of the walnut, particularly on the edges, giving these amps a lot of very cool detail!
African mahogany. This is the original! We really love the dark, red-brown color and subtle grain pattern. We got a lot of really beautiful pieces from a local supplier and love the way they turned out!
